The Dorothy Dress
Spring 2022
I designed and constructed this dress for my Tech Theater class’ met gala. The theme was fantasy and fairy tales, and I was immediately inspired by Dorothy from the wizard of oz. I loved her gingham I wanted to play on the idea of being wrapped up into fantasy. I didn’t want to just sew up Dorothy’s dress from the movie because the Met Gala is all about fashion so I designed a modern take on it. The modern silhouette I designed focused on a bustier top, puff sleeves, and a fluffy circle skirt. From their on I found Patterns for the bustier (M8116 a) and a puff sleeve (Simplicity 8506b). I patterned my own circle skirt, created a tulle underlay to add poof, and added an invisble zipper and belt. Despite being called a dress I left the blouse a skirt separate to make it easier to take on and off. I styled the dress with a red velvet headband, red combat boots, and a white turtleneck underneath. Overall I think my design was successful because it felt very fresh, people immediately recognized it as Dorothy.
